When it comes to knowing your worth as a helping professional, you might fall into one of these two general categories.
Category ONE, is where you truly get it.
You understand, express and value your own worth as a helping professional and each day you take aligned action to demonstrate this.
Geez, this sounds like the perfect practice owner! But let’s be honest, most of us do not fall into this category.
The SECOND and probably more densely populated category is where you know (consciously) that you are worth the money people pay to be supported by you, but you still find it hard to engage in the necessary behaviours that would indicate alignment to this thought.
For example: You still agree to Bulk-Bill. You offer a Reduced Fee at the first mention in session that the client is going through financial stress. Our you keep on waiving late cancellation and no-show fees. You don’t spend money on marketing as you are too scared you won’t get a return on investment. In essence, you make decisions in your practice from a mindset of fear and scarcity.
This incongruent behaviour is most probably because it is not an inherent belief as yet – it is just a thought that you would like to (let’s be honest, you would LOVE to) believe.
The thing is, we bring our unworthiness thoughts (originating from our personal life) into our business life – it would be pretty tricky not to.
Now, I’m not intending to psychoanalyse you in this post, I’m just brining this into awareness, as working on your worth as a professional will require working on your worth as a human being (and I’m all for effective time-management so why not kill two birds with one stone).
So what is the solution to all this….?
Depending on how ingrained that belief is, you might need to do some counselling of your own (which I highly recommend by the way).
For those that are middle of the road, or maybe you have already been working on this belief and have improved greatly already, I would suggest the following….
Don’t wait for the believe to change.
Start ACTING AS IF.
Because once you ACT AS IF (although that will be scary AF) you will start to see the benefits of acting in this way.
You will start to FEEL the feeling of being EMPOWERED.
The feeling of stepping INTO your own worthiness.
The feeling of stepping INTO your own abundance.
Thing is, it is not for anyone else to decide if you are worthy.
It is for YOU to DECIDE that you ARE.
You ALREADY are enough.
And even if someone gives you feedback to the contrary, that is just a reflection of where THEY are at. A reflection of their own feelings of unworthiness – don’t make that your own!
You own your stuff.
They have to own their stuff.
Now, you might think, this is awesome Gerda! But the problem is that for most of us, implementing this is a struggle. We do it for a week or so and then we go back to our old behaviours telling ourselves that ‘it didn’t work’.
Thing is: You need to accept that this is not a quick fix. You need to remind yourself EACH DAY of this. You can’t undo many years of unworthy beliefs and actions within a few weeks.
Being WORTHY is a DAILY practice.
Life it.
Breath it.
And you will become it.
