I’m writing this 20,000 feet into the Melbourne air on my way home to Brisbane…

Looking out of my window to the ever-shrinking earth below me, I noticed in the distance the amazing view that I captured for you in this image. I’m guessing this might be Mt Buller where Aussies do their skiing or perhaps not – I’m not sure.

What I do know for certain is that it is just spectacularly beautiful (which is a big part of making it such an alluring venture) especially from a distance… and this is how being a private practice owner is often perceived from the outside.

From outside the stress and panic of finding clients, managing team, paying bills, getting through a never-ending to do list, whilst still being a mum, a dad, a husband, a wife, a partner, an aunty, an uncle.

Others look at what you do and think, wow, that’s amazing! You are the boss, you have freedom, you have choice, you have control – you are so lucky!

[ Who just burst out laughing over there ?? ]

When in actual fact, it can be pretty cold and brutal, especially if you are not
PREPARED…

Imaging going up Mt Buller or any other snow-capped mountain side without the necessary snow gear…. Suicide right?!

Why then do we go into private practice without the right gear? Without the necessary and proper know-how around running a business and then when you slowly start freezing your ass off you wonder why that is happening. You wonder why it is so hard. You start to question why you are failing? You start to wonder whether you are worth of this venture?

You start to ask questions, like these, that many of my private clients were asking before working with me…

Why don’t I have clients?
Why don’t I have clients whom are happy to pay my full fee?
Why can’t I find team members?
Why are my team so demanding?
Why are my team to apathetic?
Why are my team so lacking in ownership & accountability?
Why do I have no money in the bank?
Why do I struggle to pay myself after having paid my team?
Why is there no money left over for me to look after my family?

Why do I have to clock back into work after my kids have gone to bed at night to get up to date with doing marketing, checking clinician invoices, processing wages, planning how to cover bills when I have 2 clinicians away on leave at the same time?

Why do I have so much to do that I need to give up my Sunday to go into the practice to get work done and the practice all set-up and ready for my team on Monday morning?

Why can’t I go on holiday without 10 urgent phone calls from the practice around some or other problem that needs to be attended to?

Why do I keep on having to put out fires all the time?

Just. So. Bloody. EXHAUSTING!!

And not only exhausting, it can be extremely lonely…

Imaging getting lost on a snow-capped mountain side without any snow gear and no other human in sight. How flippen scary! How flippen isolating!

Because as a practice owner you carry the burden of responsibility. When you become a private practice owner, you become responsible for…

– Your admin team
– Your clinical team
– All practice clients
– All financial obligations
– All national, state and local regulatory laws
– And literally everything related to running your business

….which includes ensuring this business is run in a financially responsible and legally solvent way as ultimately your performance in this business or lack thereof will have a DIRECT impact on your family, the family that supports you whole-heartedly but whom relies on you and your success.

This responsibility is the stuff of nightmares, as the ultimate failure in your eyes are letting these people down.

Problem is, this is a responsibility you can’t share with your admin team, your clinician team, or your family. You own it – and rightly so. It IS yours. But, you don’t have to be alone.

There are a bunch of private practice owners just around the next bend, waiting for you to say yes to joining them in support of one another.
