MONEY NEEDS A HOME
I first heard this statement from one of my business mentors…
“Money needs a home”
An interesting concept I thought.
A different way of thinking about money I thought. And, as with all things money, it took me some time to really get my head around the fact that money (an inanimate object that can unlock both the highest of highs and lowest of lows) need a home.
But it does.
The first time I knew that the proverbial penny had dropped for me on this topic was whilst out on my morning run. I was in one of my ‘running intervals’ (as I most definitely can’t RUN the whole way) when I noticed a 20c piece lying on the road. By the time my mind registered that I had just seen this old 20c piece, I was already 2 or 3 metres past it.
So I stopped.
I turned around.
I picked it up.
I took it home.
Why?
Because ‘Money needs a home’ – not so much in the literal than in the figurative sense.
Whether you keep your money under the mattress, in a safe, in the bank, or wherever – it does not really matter.
What matters is that each and every penny has been ASSIGNED.
Unless you have assigned money to something, you really have no need for it – so why then should you make more? Why then should you earn more? Unless you make the ‘space’ for more money to flow into your life – by assigning what you’ve already got to a ‘home’ – it won’t happen.
So what does this mean for YOU, as a practice owner, in a practical sense?
It starts with a budget. Yes, I know, budgets are boring, but bear with me here.
A budget sets out where your money is going – to what and where it has been assigned. But not only the standard ‘expenses budget’ where you allocate what you are going to spend your money ON, but also a ‘savings budget’ where you clearly outline what you will be contributing to… whether that is money for your next property, money for your retirement, money for an overseas trip, etc – what ever is important to you.
As for me….? I have never been one to make money just for the sake of making money. Having money stacking up somewhere in a bank account does not appeal to me. I like to use the money I make – much to my accountant’s dismay
I like to use the money I make to do good, to make a difference. The money I have made over the years has allowed me to go from solo practitioner, to group practice owner, to multiple group practice owner and now private practice success coach and mentor.
Over the last 10 years of doing what I do, I have reinvested each and every penny I have made back into my business, all assigned to a project or a position or an expansion that I know will allow me to help more people in better ways.
It is why I do what I do.
By assigning money in this way to my passion – by giving it a home in this way – I have consistently made space for more money to flow in.
So start today by giving your money a home by assigning it and knowing what it is meant for in your life.
